The Basics

Tubing on the Apple River is an activity that was started in Somerset in the early 1950's. Ever since then Tubing has become a major industry in Somerset. On a hot humid summer weekend you can expect to see thousands of people of all ages enjoying them selves in the cool water of the Apple River.

When?

The best time to go tubing obviously is when it is hot, humid, and sunny. It can be hot and humid but not sunny and when you are in and out of the water if it is not sunny it can get cold fast. The weekends is probally the best time for tubing because of all the people, unless you are bring small childern or are offended by people drinking, swearing, or exposing themselves then you would probally want to go during the week.

What to bring

You defiantly need to wear an old pair or shoes because the are sharp rocks in the river and some broken glass. Bring some food and drink. Remember ALCOHOL IS ALOUD ON THE RIVER but remember no glass or styrofoam allowed on the river. If u dont know how to swinm u probally dont need a life jacket because it is less than 3 feet deep for most of the trip. Small childern might need life jackets which you can rent from us or bring yourself. you can bring a radio, but put it in a garbage bag so that it doesnt get wet, football, or anything else that you can use for fun on the river. Do not bring your own tubes, rafts, or air mattresses because you will not be let on the bus.

How does it work?

When you rent your tubes you should rent one tube per person and one tube per cooler that you plan on bringing, call for current prices at (715) 247-3020. You will need one set of keys and a valid drivers lisense as a deposit to rent tubes. If you are bringing pop or beer you will have to put a $5 can deposit on your cans and you will be charged 25 cents per can not returned. We also rent coolers. If you forget to bring pop or beer or bring glass bottles you can buy caned pop from the pop machine or beer at the Eatery, where you can also get food or play volleyball.

The Trip

The Hide-A-Way is located 1/2 way down the river. you get in the river and tube down an hour to and hour and a half depending on how fast the water is moving. You exit the river right after the rapids at the village park, which is run by us, and get on the bus which takes you to the top of the river. From there you tube down the river until you reach the Hide-A-Way. Right before you reach the Hide-A-Way you will see the Apple River Eatery which sells beer on and off sale and food. With a $10 deposit you can rent a volleyball and play for as long as you want on any of the four beach volleyball courts. When you reach the Hide-A-Way, if it is early enough in the day you can make another trip for no extra charge, but make sure you have your tubes returned by the time that you are told when you rent your tubes. There is a $10 charge on tubes returned late and lost tubes.
